Food Safety Management System (FSMS)

ISO 22000 is a standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that provides requirements for a food safety management system (FSMS). This standard was first published in 2005 and is regularly updated to ensure it remains relevant and effective.

The ISO 22000 standard outlines a framework for managing food safety hazards, from the production of raw materials to the consumption of finished products. It covers all types of food businesses, including primary producers, manufacturers, processors, and retailers.

The standard focuses on the following key areas:

  • Interactive communication: ensuring effective communication within the food supply chain
  • System management: establishing and maintaining a food safety management system
  • Prerequisite programmes: establishing and maintaining a clean and hygienic environment
  • Hazard analysis: identifying and evaluating potential food safety hazards
  • Operational prerequisites: establishing and maintaining effective food safety control measures
  • Hazard control: implementing and maintaining effective hazard control measures
  • System improvement: monitoring and continually improving the food safety management system.

The aim of ISO 22000 is to ensure that food is safe for consumption by establishing a systematic approach to managing food safety hazards. It is designed to help organizations meet their legal and regulatory requirements, as well as meet the expectations of customers and other stakeholders.
